California’s New Composting Law 2022

Have you heard the news?! Effective immediately, all residents can place food scraps inside their organics/yard trimmings cart. Brian and Dan made this video to help you understand how the new program works and what you can do to chip in.

As you know, California is experiencing the effects of the climate crisis. Scientists tell us that greenhouse gasses released by human activities, like landfilling food and yard waste, contribute to climate change. Landfills are the third largest source of methane in California.

Organic waste in landfills emits 21% of the state’s methane, a climate super pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Organics like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills.

To respond to this climate crisis, California is implementing statewide organic waste recycling and surplus food recovery and all we have to do is put our food waste in our organics bin along with mown grass, dead leaves and all other yard trimmings.

We recommend you take a moment to look at the Residential “How To Guide” for Garbage, Recyclables and Organics for more information about Organics AND recycling.  For instance, we bet you didn’t know you can put E-Waste in your recycling bin, did you?
